Cat Roundworm, Symptoms, How to Diagnose And Treat Cat Round Worms Easily

Most cat owners do not realize that their cats are coping with an illness unless when the disease has entered into complicated stage making treatment more difficult.

cat worms are intestinal parasitic  that are often quite large  up to 10 to 12 centi meters in length and are present in extremely high numbers within an infected cat.cat  Roundworms are not  harmful to adult and healthy cats, but large numbers of worms may cause life threatening problems in kittens and older cats.

The life cycle of the roundworm is complicated. Once they are ingested, the larvae hatch out in the cat's gastro intestinal tract and move through the muscle, liver, and lungs. After many weeks, the larvae returns to the intestine back to mature into adults. When the adult worms begin to lay egs to reproduce, eggs pass into the cat stool, thus completing the life cycle of the parasite.

How to Diagnosed Cat Roundworms

Adult roundworms live in the cat's intestines. Most of time cats will not have signs of infection however with the increase in infection cats start showing symptoms like vomiting weight loss, dull hair, and a potbellied appearance. The cat will start coughing c if the roundworms enter into the lungs.

To diagnose roundworm a small amount of the cat stool is mixed with a special solution that causes the eggs to float on the top of the solution. The sample is covered with a glass slide on which the floating eggs will collect, and the slide is examined under a microscope. The distinctive eggs are easily recognized under the microscope. This is called a fecal floatation.Occasionally, adult roundworms can be found in the cat's stool or vomit.

Symptom

Colic.
Lethargy.
Vomiting.
Abdominal swelling.
Abnormal feces.
Poor nursing (in females)
Anorexia.
Coughing

How Do Cats Get Roundworms

1.   Trans-mammary or milk-borne

The immature roundworms called larvae maybe present in the mother's mammary glands.during feeding the larvae may pass to kitten as well.

2.   From Feces

kittens and adult cats may become infected by swallowing eggs that contain inefective roundworm larvae and these eggs may come from the feces of infected cats.

3.   Paratenic Host

At paratenic host, the roundworm eggs do not mature, but are just transported. If a cat eat the paratenic host, the roundworm  complete their life cycle. Some common paratenic hosts include earthworms, cockroaches, rodents, and birds.

Treatment For Roundworms

1.   Deworming Medication

The treatment for roundworms is very safe simple and relatively inexpensive. The dead and dying roundworms exit through the stool after deworming medication. As immature larva of roundworms are not killed therefore two to three treatment is required and is done at 2-3 week intervals.

Females on breeding should be dewormed prior to pregnancy and again in late pregnancy. This will reduce the risk of transmission from the mother to new kittens.

Adult cats remain at risk for re infection with roundworms throughout their lives. Whenever roundworms are seen the cat should be dewormed immediately.

2.   Fecal Examination

Cats that like to hunt mice or indoor outdoor cats  have a fecal examination several times a year.
Many heartworm preventive products contain medications that will treat roundworm infections. This is the easy and simplest method for preventing roundworms.

3.    Insect control

Controlling of insects and rodents is important since they may act as sources of roundworm infection for cats. Surfaces that may be contaminated with roundworm eggs can also be treated with this bleach solution. This solution makes the eggs easier to rinse away but does not kill the eggs.Appropriate disposal of cat and dog feces, especially from yards and playgrounds, is important. Roundworm eggs remain alive in the environment for long periods unless ifare exposed to direct sunlight or very dry conditions.

4.    Cleaning of Litter Box

Stool should be removed from litter boxes daily. Litter boxes should be cleaned with a bleach solution mixing one cup of chlorine bleach in one gallon of water to facilitate removal of eggs. Rinse the litter box thoroughly to remove all bleach.

5.   Strict hygiene
Strict hygiene is especially important for children. Do not let  children to play in potentially contaminated environments. Be careful of the risk that public parks and non covered sandboxes pose. Even though stool may not be visible, roundworm eggs may  present. Sandboxes that have fitted covers are popular and help prevent infection of children with roundworms.
